Barely Holding - Chapter 1
I darted behind the corner of the building just in time, peering round just to make sure they didn't see me. Thankfully, I was safe. The two huge guards were walking back towards the building I had just run from; they hadn't seen me. I could barely believe it! I clutched the precious papers to my chest, feeling my heart pounding beneath my shirt. When I was absolutely sure they had gone I pulled a red jacket from my rucksack and pulled it on, then pulled my brown hair into a pony tail and slid on a pair of thick glasses. This was the best disguise I could manage before I had to get out of here, so I straightened the heavy frames on my nose and stepped out from behind the building, walking slowly onto the main street from the alley. As I walked I carefully tucked the papers into the front pocket of my jacket, not trusting the rucksack to hold them. As long as I could feel them, I wouldn't lose them. And I couldn't lose them. I walked slowly, taking a roundabout route to get back to my small apartment, but it gave me time to think. I had the papers now, so I could leave this city, finally. Not that I didn't like Leeds, but I had been here too long. And now I had what I needed - what I had needed all these years - I could finally start the real search. The search for the Gardens of Babylon.
